Once again, the fishing around Bundaberg will be a little difficult due to the amount of fresh water coming down from further upstream, as well as the constant south-easterlies that keep pushing the showers in along our coastline.
There were a few nice barramundi up to 106cm caught in the Kolan River just after the closure finished on the 1st of February.
One of the positives is that Lake Monduran has not overflowed, but is currently sitting around 20cm below the spillway. Let’s hope there are no more big rain events this summer and we can keep the barramundi that we’ve worked so hard to put into our local impoundments.
I ventured out to this magic little impoundment early on Monday morning. The water level is as high as I’ve ever seen, making launching the boat a breeze. All the weed in the dam looks very healthy, holding heaps of bait for the bass and saratoga to feed on.
I like to start most sessions at Lake Gregory by casting surface lures around the lily pads and weed edges. This resulted in two nice bass and heap of other missed strikes. As the sun came up, I ventured out into the main basin using the Humminbird side-imaging sounder to locate schools of bass, and before long, the screen lit up. Whilst the schooled bass weren’t big, they were hungry. This started one of the best sessions I have ever had.
The lures hot that morning were Jackall Deracoup, Nories Tailspinners, Little Max Blades and Bassman Spinnerbaits.
Let’s hope that we’ve got more positive news on the saltwater scene next week.
