All of our local rivers and creeks have been running fresh and I would suggest the best chance to hook a fish this weekend would be around the river mouths where the water should be slightly cleaner. The only positive is that after every good rain event the local run-off usually freshens up our local rivers and results in fantastic fishing over the next few weeks once things settle.
I’m tipping that once the water in the Burnett cleans up, the grunter should be on the bite. I remember that the first week of February last year was when we had a few awesome sessions catching grunter up to 60cm, all on soft plastics.
Now the barra season is open, this could be another option this weekend. Trolling deep-diving hard-body lures around the river mouths should result in a few hook-ups.
By all reports Gin Gin and Monduran did not receive as much rain as Bundaberg. I did hear that Lake Monduran has come up around 300mm, but the water colour was still clean enough to fish. All the barra that have been hooked lately have been either biting on Jackall Squirrels or Smash Minnows or soft plastics like Squidgy Slick Rigs or Zerek Flat Shads.
Lake Gregory is probably still one of the best bass dams in Queensland. This fantastic little dam doesn’t suffer with floods because it’s a balancing dam. The bass and saratoga have both been smashing top water lures early, then the good old spinnerbaits have been the go-to lure as the day heats up.
