Close Reefs Fishing Well off Tin Can Bay

We have had some pretty awesome conditions over the past week with warm sunny days with only light winds.  With schools of spotty and Spanish mackerel working just beyond the bar there has been plenty of boaties taking advantage of the great conditions to get amongst them. Even the close in reefs in front of Rainbow have been fishing well for squire, sweetlip and squire.  These reefs are easily accessible with smaller vessels launched off the beach as well as being an easy paddle for kayaker’s.

Inside the bay, mangrove jack are being caught in some pretty reasonable numbers with fish to 50cm+ being caught over the past week. The mackerel action isn’t just limited to the offshore scene with areas such as Big Mick and Bluff reef also being worth a try.  Floating whole pilchards, yakka’s or slimy mackerel rigged on a set of gang hooks will often produce good results.

Looking at the forecast for the weekend it looks like we are in for some hot and humid conditions with possible showers and storms predicted.  If your lucky enough to score a Monday off making it a 4 day long weekend for Australia Day it’s looking like a cracker of a day to hit the water.

Have a great Australia Day and until next time stay safe on the water.

Regards,

Jim Cole
