We see a lot of bread and butter species caught by kids from this pier – bream, whit- ing, flathead, cod, but- terfish, toadfish and my favourite, garfish.
Gar also make for awesome cut bait for bream, flathead and snapper – even the odd mangrove jack has found it hard to resist.
Deep Water Bend has family facilities, barbe- cue, playgrounds and plenty of shaded areas.
A while back, I did a write-up on catching garfish, so in case you missed it, here’s a cut- down version.
If pier fishing is not your thing and you want a spot that’s a little quieter, give our local creeks and rivers a go.
Dohles Rocks, Bright- on foreshore, Margate Beach and Queens Beach are awesome places to unwind for the day or a few hours, and there are usually plenty of whiting, bream and flathead within target- ing range for kids.
Gar would have to be one of the easiest fish for kids to chase – light gear, either a small pencil or bobby float, a No. 12 Mustad long shank hook, a tiny bit of beachworm, blood- worm or prawn, and you’re set.
While these areas of- fer less shade for the kids, with the help of a broad-brimmed hat, a great day out can still be achieved.
If you’re venturing in- to Moreton Bay, make sure you take at least one rod a bit heavier than the rest.
