With bream however, you can try a pause- start-pause approach to induce a strike.

Once you have mas- tered the technique, your lure should come across the top with a tight left to right ac- tion, while spitting jets of water from the front of the lure.
Flatties, well they are pigs and will explode from the bottom at any time and use their bucket-like mouths to suck down the surface lure.
You don’t need fancy equipment either – any light 7’ spin outfit load- ed with light braid and a light fluorocarbon leader will do the trick.
I believe that the spit- ting of water from the front of the lure is a major influence in at- tracting the fish and making them rise from the bottom to strike.
Another thing I do is always stop the lure just short of the boat on every retrieve, as a lot of fish follow the lure to the boat and have last minute strike at it.

Whiting, bream and flathead are the main players when fishing the flats.
These strikes right be- side the boat are com- mon and provide the ultimate rush.
There are heaps of surface lures on the market that are perfect for topwater fishing, but my favourite go-to lures are the 70mm Bassday Sugapen and locally produced MMD Splash Prawns.
