Two months of cold
I recently took a cou- ple of trips on the Fitz- roy River with good mate Luke Peisker.
I’m a big believer that you can learn plenty from the super-tough days.

Red emperor have been caught in good numbers around reefs such as Douglas Shoal and Moresby Bank.
winter weather makes getting a bite out of species such as king threadfin salmon, bar- ramundi and mangrove jack very difficult.
One day we battled a sudden drop in air tem- perature and the next we struggled with strong southeasterly wind.
It forces change, so to speak.

Tiger squid have been reliable in all the usual places including Humpy Island, Miall Is- land and various places around North Keppel Island, such as Pump- kinandSlopingislands.
I’ve seen some prop- er winter giants up to 150cm being caught out there.
Samaki and Zerek vibes have done most of the damage.
School and spotted mackerel have been patchy along the coast- line due to the wind not letting the bay clear.
There have only been a few windows of op- portunity to head wide.
