Recent electrofish- ing surveys revealed a staggering three-fold increase in barramun- di numbers at the 36 sites where structures have been installed in the dam.
“We believe this will be a great tourism as- set to our region, as there are significant economic benefits as- sociated with fishing- based tourism.
“All the structures have been designed with durability in mind, to ensure they have no detrimental impact on the aquatic environment, and they are relatively snag-free meaning anglers can fish right in the habitat with less risk of losing fishing gear,” he said.
Mayor Greg Wil- liamson said this was a tremendous result for local anglers and the tourism industry.
“The annual eco- nomic value of the Kinchant Dam fishery is currently estimated at $1.1 million per an- num and with projects like this we hope to see that number in- crease into the future.”
Council and the Department of Ag- riculture and Fisher- ies would also like to thank Mackay Area Fish Stocking Associ- ation, Walkerston Ro- tary and St Patrick’s Senior College for their contributions to this project.
“The goals of the pro- ject were to increase structural fish habitat diversity, improve an- gler experiences and catch rates, and reduce the number of an- glers fishing along the dam infrastructure in closed zones,” he said.
Mayor Williamson said community par- ticipation was vital to the success of this project.

“The fact we’ve been able to increase the number of barramundi found in fish-attract- ing sites by three times the amount found in open water is testa- ment to the success of this project.
“Without the help of volunteers who gen- erously donated their time to construct the fish-attracting struc- tures at a number of community work- shops, this project would not have been economically viable.
