Great Week on Gold Coast

We’ve had a great week on the Gold Coast with School Holidays in full swing, nice weather to kick off the Flathead Classic and we’re looking forward to the Labour Day Long Weekend.

With the amount of quality Flathead caught lately the Flathead Classic should see good numbers of fish caught over the 3 day comp, fishing kicked off on Thursday 1st of October with fantastic weather conditions for all the teams competing. Our customers have been catching some nice Flathead ranging from good eating size 45 -50cm up to the big girls mid 70-80cm.  As per Qld size limits all fish under 40cm and over 75cm need to be released.  It’s great to see all the larger fish being handled with care whilst taking photos prior to being released.

The Jumpinpin bar entrance is one of the main areas to chase Flathead during October with the big females attracting lots of males during breeding season, if you catch a large fish its worth covering the area as there is usually 10 or more males hanging around to target.  Work the deep water in the bar and the banks either side of the bar mouth including Kalinga Bank and the North Bedrooms. Customers have caught some nice fish around Crusoe Island, in Tiger Mullet Channel, Canaipa Passage, Jacobs Well, Logan River, Tipplers Passage, Dux, Wave Break Island, Crab Island Banks and the Gold Coast Seaway also holding good numbers of large fish.  There has been a lot of weed around during the week, you may find trolling hard body lures will be hard work unless you can find some clean water, I’d recommend working soft plastics, blades & vibes these methods can be very productive, best baits are White Pilchards WA Pilchards, Prawns, Yabbies and Mullet Fillet.

With warmer weather upon us our customers have been catching some solid Whiting this week on worms and small yabbies.  I recommend using a long trace up to 1m long of 6lb fluro carbon and a small size 6 hook to increase the hook up rate, make sure you have a large enough sinker to stay in touch with the bottom, I recommend a #4 ball.  Daytime fishing is producing some nice fish and night time is starting to take off with some larger Whiting showing up.  Good spots to try are Wave Break Island, Runaway Bay, Paradise Point, Coomera River, Jacobs Well, Logan River, Bedrooms and Canaipa Passage.

Bream are still around in good numbers and still a favourite of lots of anglers to target, a few Mangrove Jack and Estuary Cod are also showing up as the days warm up in October. Houseboat customers managed to find a feed of Sand Crabs at the Never Fail Islands, Tipplers Passage, Jacobs Well, Crab Island, Tiger Mullet Channel and Currigee.  Mud Crabs have been a bit hit and miss this week, maybe a bit rain is needed to get them on the move but well worth a try. At the time of writing my report it looks like light Southerly winds over the weekend and plenty of sunshine and light winds for all next week which is great news.
