Hit the beaches during westerly wind

It was nice to see the Westerly winds ease during the week, we have had plenty of Fishing options to choose from on the Gold Coast.
We have had a few reports of Tailor stating to show up on the local surf beaches the last couple of weeks in better numbers. It has been a pretty slow start to the season compared to past years. With the Westerly winds around it is a great time to hit the beaches for a look. Some spots that have produced a feed are the Sand Pumping jetty, Main Beach north to the Seaway, The Gold Coast Seaway Rock Walls, Broadbeach and also Palm Beach. Finding a good gutter to fish is the key to success, the rising tide is the best time to fish, as the bait is pushed into the gutters the Tailor will follow. Whole WA pilchards are popular bait, also try Mullet Fillet or Bonito Strips will work a treat. It can be a waiting game but when the fish show up you can catch good numbers quite quickly, if the bite is slow try ditching the wire trace for a longer mono leader, you may get the odd bite off but you will catch more fish. If the fish are on it can get quite busy on the beach, just remember a bit of courtesy to your fellow anglers and the size bag limit is 35cm and a maximum of 20 fish per person.
My customers have been getting amongst some quality Bream this week, try the Coomera River both North & South Arms, Wave Break Island, Gold Coast Seaway, Runaway Bay Canal entrances, Logan River, Kalinga Bank, Tipplers Passage, Dux, Whalleys Gutter, Crusoe Island and Short Island. It has been a great winter Bream season so far with plenty of quality fish around. Best baits are Prawns, White Pilchards, Mullet Fillet, Fishos, Mullet Gut and Yabbies.
Good numbers of Flathead have been caught this week, lots of crews are out practicing for the Flathead Classis with some great fishing on offer. Soft plastics, Metal Blades, Vibes, Hard Body lures and bait will all work if you can find the fish, fluro Carbon Leader is a must when fishing lures. Some good spots to try are the Never Fail Islands, Tipplers Passage, Curtis, Dux, Brown Island, Crab Island, Jacobs Well, Canaipa Passage and Tiger Mullet Channel.
Reports of a few nice Jewfish being caught in the Seaway on the pipe line this week and also the Pin Bar mouth are worth a look on the incoming tide.
Sand Crabs have been on the move, it’s worth dropping in some pots while you fish.
At the time of writing my report it looks like we will see the stronger Westerly winds return for Friday, by Saturday the wind will tend S/SE and we may see shower or two. The winds will ease by Tuesday giving us a nice week for fishing.
