Houseboat customers catch tailor, whiting, flathead and more

We had pretty tough conditions for competitors fishing the Gold Coast Flathead Classic with Strong W/NW winds testing out everyone’s patience. It was nice to see the wind ease by Sunday and give everyone a perfect weather window to get out on the water over the Queen’s Birthday Long Weekend.

The Gold Coast Flathead Classic dominated the fishing news on the Gold Coast last week kicking off on Thursday 29th September and running to Saturday 1st of October. Fishing conditions were extremely hard with strong W/NW winds blowing for the 3 days of fishing testing out all teams competing.  A total of 588 anglers made up of 240 teams managed to catch and release a total of 4195 Flathead.  A big congratulation goes out to the Wilson Fishing team of Kord, Robbie and our very own tackle rep Scott Fleming on hard earnt first place finish. Some extra-large fish were caught this year, Christian Cross a friend of mine was over the moon landing the biggest Flathead of the comp a 96cm beast, well done.

A break in the wind on Sunday meant an opportunity to head offshore for a look, my mate Wayne took me and my 11 year old daughter out for her first reef fishing trip.   A bit of SW wind early made the boat sit a bit funny against the current but we managed to find a few good shows on the local 18 fathom reef, getting the fish to bite with some extra boating traffic was the hard bit.  We ended up with a good feed of Trag, Snapper, Moses Perch and lost a couple of nice fish to the reef.  A few Mac Tuna are still moving through and up around the Pin the Long Tail Tuna have still been hanging around for a few lucky anglers.

Our School Holiday Houseboat customers managed to put together a feed of Whiting, Bream, Flathead, Tailor and Sand Crabs the past week.  Some good spots have been Wave Break Island, Currigee, Coomera River, Tipplers Passage, Dux, Jacobs Well, Tiger Mullet, Canaipa Passage and the Logan river are worth a go. Prawns, White Pilchards, WA Pilchards, Mullet Fillet, Worms and Yabbies are great bait.  Flathead have been caught on bait, soft plastics, soft vibes and blades worked around drop offs and creek mouths in these areas.

At the time of writing my report we will see moderate W/NW wind on Saturday and S/SE change move through on Sunday morning before easing as the day goes on. The good news is we should see plenty of Sunshine for the next week.

If you have any great catches to report or fishing photos please email them to brett@coomerahouseboats.com.au    Good luck with the Fishing.  Brett
