Mixed Bag Around Coomera

We’ve had a windy start to School Holidays on the Gold Coast this week, our Houseboat customers have found some good spots to hide out of the wind and managed to catch a good mixed bag of fish and crabs. It’s been good to see the smiles and hear the stories from all the kids this week having fun catching fish on School Holidays.  If you can get the little ones into fishing from a young age you will have a fishing buddy for life.  I have heard stories about little fish, big fish, stingrays, catfish, catching yabbies and soldiers crabs for bait they just enjoying spending time outdoors which I think is great.

Tiger Mullet Channel has been a popular fishing spot this week giving you lots of protection from the Southey wind, it offers good yabbie banks, deep holes to fish and creeks to drop the crab pots in.  We have seen a good mixed bag of Bream, Whiting, Flathead, Sand Crabs and a few Mud Crabs being caught. Some other good spots to try are Oak Passage, Cobby Passage, Koureyabba, Logan River, Jacobs Well, Tipplers Passage, Pimpama River and the Coomera River is fishing well.

Land Based fishing has also been good, try the Coomera River, Paradise Point, Labrador, Biggera Waters, Jacobs Well, and The Southport Spit. Best baits are Prawns, Yabbies, Worms, White Pilchards, Mullet Fillet and Whole Mullet for the Crab Pots.

Reports of big Flathead just keep on coming in again this week, large fish from 80-90cm have been caught in the Pin Bar mouth and surrounding area and also in the Gold Coast Seaway.  The big females are getting ready to spawn in the deep water around the ocean mouths just in time for the Flathead Classic.  If you find a large fish just keep on fishing the area as there should be plenty of males in the 45cm to 50cm range hanging around, these guys make a nice feed.  When you catch a large fish remember to handle them with care as they are the future of fishing, a quick photo and then release your prized catch.  The legal size limit in Qld is min 40cm Max 75cm.   Large Soft Plastics, Vibes and Blades rigged on 20-30lb fluro carbon leader is a good way to fish deep water.

Once the Southerly drops it will be worth a look around the local bridges, rock walls, pontoons and canals for a Mangrove Jack, Estuary Cod and Trevally on the Gold Coast. At the time of writing my report it looks like the strong Southerly wind will persist over the weekend with a few showers on the cards.  The wind will ease by Monday and into next week. If you have any great catches to report or fishing photos please email them to brett@coomerahouseboats.com.au

Good luck with the Fishing.  Brett
