Mud Crabs, Mackerel and More on Gold Coast

Easter turned on some fantastic weather for us on the Gold Coast, it’s was great to see everyone out and about enjoying our awesome waterways. With Easter over and school holidays in full swing let’s have a look at what’s been happening this week.

With School Holidays under way it’s a great time to get the kids out of the house and go fishing. The idea is to keep it simple and get the kids involved as much as possible. Try catching your own bait is great fun, teach them how to pump yabbies or catch beach worms, they will have a ball.

You don’t need expensive rods and reels, a basic cheap kid’s combo will work fine. It does not matter how big or small the fish is they catch it’s all about fun. Bream, Whiting and Flathead can be caught from the shore or in a boat. Some good land based spots to try are Paradise Point, Runaway Bay, Hope Island, Coomera River Bridge, Marine Stadium, Grand Hotel Jetty, Jacobs Well and Labrador. A packet of Prawns, White Pilchards, Worms or Yabbies will work well.

Some nice Spanish Mackerel were caught last weekend on the close reefs east of the Seaway during the Gold Coast Sportfish Club “Wilson Fishing Mackerel Classic”. It will be worth sneaking out for a look.

A few cool nights hasn’t stopped Mangrove Jack, Estuary Cod and Trevally from hitting baits and lures in the Coomera River this week, customers have reported some nice fish being caught. Other good spots are Sovereign Island, Paradise Point, Sanctuary Cove, Runaway Bay Canals and the Nerang River.

Customers have found some nice Mud Crabs in the Coomera River, Pimpama River, Brown Island, The Never Fail Islands, Tipplers Passage, Tiger Mullet Channel, Jacobs Well, Logan River and Canaipa Passage.

Whiting are still around in good numbers in the North and South arms of the Coomera, Paradise Point, Wave Break Island, Jacobs Well, Bedrooms, Crusoe Island, Tiger Mullet Channel and the Logan River. Yabbies and Worms are the “go to” baits. At the time of writing my report it looks like we will see light Easterly winds during over the weekend tending light to moderate South Easterly by Monday. Saturday looks like the best day to hit the water.

If you have any great catches to report or fishing photos please email them to brett@coomerahouseboats.com.au

Good luck with the Fishing.
