Prawns, Mud Crabs and Wahoo on Gold Coast

The weather gods have been smiling on the Gold Coast this week for school holidays, with conditions perfect for having fun outdoors.  Let’s have a look at what’s been biting.

Houseboat customers have been catching a few quality Mud Crabs, with the New Moon this week the tides have been larger than normal and this tends to make the Mud Crabs more active as it gives all the creeks a good flush out. Whole Mullet or fish frames are great bait, some goods spots have been Jacobs Well, Cabbage Tree Point, Logan River, Canaipa Passage, Tiger Mullet Channel, Eden Island, The Never Fail’s, Coomera River, Paradise Point and Brown Island.  Just watch the depth of water and your rope length as the tide is fairly strong and your pots may drift away.

It’s great to see the kid’s have been catching a few Whiting, Bream and Flathead from the Houseboats and also land based this week. Paradise Point, Jacobs Well, Labrador, Coomera River, Hope Island and Marine stadium have all been good spots to try your luck.

Prawns have been a bit hot and cold so far this season, it’s just a matter of looking around the usual spots like the Logan River, Russell Island, Cabbage Tree Point or Jacobs Well and persistence will pay off with a feed.  If you find a patch you should do ok, either side of a tide change is a good time to look.

A few locals are still having great success on quality Mangrove Jack  in the Coomera River this week, live baits and lures fished around the many bridges, jetty’s, natural snags and rock walls have been rewarded.

Offshore fishing has seen a nice run of Wahoo around the 24 fathom reefs, quality Spanish are also on offer.  As the current starts to slow down toward the end of the month bottom fishing will be a bit easier option. At the time of writing my report it looks like we will see light North East to Northerly winds over the weekend then tending light to moderate South Easterly by Tuesday.   Saturday looks like the best day to hit the water.

Good luck with the fishing.
