Quality Catches Around Coomera

Hot Northerly winds have dominated the weather over the past week. With a strong Southerly change during the week, fishing has been a bit tough, but those that persist have found a feed on the Gold Coast.  Let’s have a look at what’s biting and a few School Holiday fishing options for the kids.

School Holidays start today and Summer is a great time of year to get the kids out of the house and check out a few local fishing spots.  Keep things simple and involve the kids as much as possible, show them how to tie on their hooks and swivels and bait the hook.   Collecting bait is great fun, the kids love pumping yabbies, digging pippies or chasing soldier crabs around the beach.

You don’t need top quality gear, just a basic cheap kids combo like Wilson Hassle Free outfit will do the trick.  Just remember it’s all about fun for the kids no matter how big or small the fish is they catch.  If you have younger kids choose a spot that has toilets and a playground nearby like Paradise Point Jetty.  It’s rewarding to see a big smile on their face when they catch a fish.  Target estuary species like Bream, Whiting and Flathead which can be caught from the shore or in a boat, some good land based spots to take the kids to are Paradise Point, Hope Island, Coomera River, Marine Stadium, Grand Hotel Jetty and Nerang River parks.

Customers have been catching some quality Whiting around Wave Break Island, Marine Stadium, Paradise Point, Coomera River, Bedrooms, Tiger Mullet Channel, Jacobs Well, Slipping Sands and throughout the Logan River.  Worms and Yabbies are great bait. Catches of Bream and Flathead have been reported by our Houseboat Hirers, Tiger Mullet Channel, Dux, Never Fails Islands, Coomera River, Jacobs Well, Wave Break Island are worth a look.

The Seaway and Pin Bar entrances have been producing some nice School Jew and Trevally action lately.  Just remember the size limit is 75cm for Jewfish in Queensland. Once the wind eases and the swell drops it will be worth checking out either Palm Beach or Mermaid Reefs for a Spotty Mackerel, reports of a few showing up have filtered in during the week.  Some good catches have been taken in Moreton Bay the past couples of weeks.  Throwing small metal slugs, slow trolling WA pilchards or anchoring up and floating out Pilchard baits on wire will all work.

Our customers are catching plenty of Sand Crabs this week, best spots are Crab Island, Currigee, Tipplers Passage, Never Fails Islands, Jacobs Well, Whalleys Gutter, Canaipa Passage and the Power Lines. At the time of writing my report the forecast for the weekend will see stronger S/SE winds, try and find a spot out of the wind to throw in a line, we have plenty of options in the Broadwater and around the Pin.
