I hope everyone had a great Christmas and is looking forward to the New Year.
The Strong Southerly wind has been relentless so far this week on the Gold Coast, stick to the rivers and estuary’s until the wind eases.
With the Southerly wind dictating where to fish this week our customers have been catching some quality Whiting around the rivers and estuary’s of the Gold Coast. Whiting are a great fish for the family and kids to target, if you can find a school of fish active you should catch a nice feed. Some good spots this week out of the wind are the Logan River, Jacobs Well, Canaipa Passage, Tiger Mullet Channel, Tipplers Passage, Pimpama River, Coomera River, Wave Break Island and Marine Stadium.
Live Yabbies and Worms are the best bait, fish light leader 6lb fluorocarbon matched with a size 6 bait holder hook and enough weight to keep your bait in the strike zone.
Mangrove Jack were quite active before the blow, once the Southerly eases and the weather warms up a bit they will start to get more aggressive. The Coomera River has been holding some big fish so far this season, we have had a few fish up to 60cm hanging around our jetty at Gold Coast City Marina. You just need to put in the time to be rewarded, if you are casting lures whether using hard body’s or plastics you may need to pepper the same snag 20 times before you annoy a fish enough to hit your lure.
Some other good spots to look are the Logan River, Power Lines, Rocky Point, Tiger Mullet Channel, Jacobs Well, Runaway Bay Canals and the Nerang River, if you find structure or snags you should find a fish.
Customers have found a few nice Flathead during December fishing the edges of sandbanks and feeder creek mouths in the Broadwater and Jumpinpin, Prawns, White Pilchards, WA Pilchards, Mullet Fillet and Live Yabbies are great bait. Trolling Hard body lures or casting Plastics is a productive method and may also produce by catch like Trevally, Cod or Jacks.
The Gold Coast Seaway pipeline is an option in the wind, just watch the swell. We have had reports of some nice Jew Fish, Trevally and even a few Tailor showing up.
Mud Crabs have started to show up in better numbers this week, a bit more rain should get them chewing, it always worth setting the pots while you fish.
At the time of writing my report the S/SE winds will hang around until Saturday before starting to ease a bit, they may return by Tuesday.
The waterways will be extra busy during New Years, be safe and courteous to your fellow boaties and enjoy the festive season.
If you have any great catches to report or fishing photos please email them to email@example.com Good luck with the Fishing. Brett
