Variety of fish on offer at Gold Coast

The Gold Coast has seen a bit of variety on the weather scene this week from moderate SE winds over the weekend to rain on Wednesday and a cold Westerly change to finish off the week.  Just like the weather we have seen a variety of fish being caught as well.

Flathead seem to dominate catches reported by customers in the Broadwater, Jumpinpin and local rivers on the Gold Coast this week.  A good variety of different size fish are being caught from big 93cm monsters to good eating size fish in that 45cm to 55cm range.  With the Flathead Classic hosted by the Gold Coast Sport Fish Club fast approaching the signs are looking good.  I was out on Sunday and managed to score a few fish casting Zerek Fish Traps around, I noticed that the dreaded snot weed was starting to show up a bit more making fishing tedious at times.  As we head closer to Flathead breeding season September/October the fish will be on the move closer to both ocean entrances, fishing around the Jumpinpin Bar entrance and the Gold Coast Seaway will start to get better as time goes on.  If you manage to catch a big fish keep working that area as there will be good numbers of medium size male fish around to target.

Best methods depending on the terrain you are fishing will be trolling Zerek Tango Shads, working Zman Soft Plastics, TT Blades and Zerek Fish Traps are all good options.  Some good spots to look are Wave Break Island, The Gold Coast Seaway, Marine Stadium, Crab Island and Middle Banks, Currigee, Brown Island, Aldershots, Tipplers Passage, Curtis, Bedrooms, Jumpinpin Bar, Jacobs Well, The Never Fail Islands, Kalinga Bank and Canaipa Passage.

As the weather warms up Whiting will start to show up in good numbers and size, customers have been finding some nice fish the past few weeks.  Some good spots have been the Logan River, Tiger Mullet Channel, Green Bank, Jacobs Well, Coomera River both arms, Pimpama River, Paradise Point and Wave Break Island.  Just remember to use a good heavy sinker like a 4 ball to keep your bait on the bottom and a nice long leader.  Worms and Yabbies are the best bait.

Reports of Jew Fish are still coming in this week with the Gold Coast Seaway fishing well on the pipeline and north wall on live baits and big plastics.  The Pin Bar mouth is also producing some nice fish on the same methods. Some other spots that are fishing well are Marks Rocks in the Logan River, Short Island Huts and Five Ways Junction.

Bream are still a good option to target land based, fishing near structure like rock walls and jetties and bridges should produce some quality fish. Mullet Fillet, Mullet Gut, Prawns, Squid, White Pilchards, Worms and Yabbies are great bait.

At the time of writing my report we will see a few showers around for the Gold Coast Show Day public holiday Friday and light to moderate Southerly winds. Saturday and Sunday are both looking fine with moderate South to S/W winds. Looks like a good weekend on the way.
