What’s Biting Around Coomera

We’ve been starting to move into a bit more of a Summer weather pattern here on the Gold Coast this week with hot days and an afternoon or evening storm to cool things down, it’s time to start chasing a Mangrove Jack.

I was lucky enough to sneak out Tuesday morning for a few hours, with a new moon and northerly wind forecast it can sometimes make fishing a little bit harder. The water quality wasn’t great in the Broadwater but we managed to find some bait schools in the deep channels to work our blades and plastics.

We caught a small Moses Perch and a Bream until my mate Wayne’s Zman soft plastic screamed off peeling the 6lb braid off the reel flat out, we took off after his fish and recovered enough line to cover the spool again. Weed was a bit of an issue building up on the light braid, we just cleared it as he fought his fish, after a 10 min fight he landed a Monster Broadwater GT at 82cm what a great effort, a few photos then the GT was released to fight another day.

With the current weather pattern of hot days and afternoon storms this week now is the perfect time to start chasing a Mangrove Jack on the rising barometer, we have seen a few caught around the Gold Coast City Marina in the Coomera River by Kayak fisherman this week.

They have been rolling Zman 4’ minnows along the edges of the pontoons, this method will also work around rock walls, rock bars, bridges and snags. Trolling hard body lures or live bait is also a great way to target a Jack. Canals throughout the Broadwater and the Nerang River are good spots to have a look, also bridges, rock walls and fallen trees will hold fish.

Houseboat customers found some good Flathead and some quality Whiting around Tiger Mullet Channel, Canaipa Passage, Crusoe Island, Logan River, Jacobs Well, Never Fail Islands, Pimpama River, Coomera River and Crab Island.
