What’s on the bite on Gold Coast

We have seen some cooler nights and nice clear days on the Gold Coast this week, let’s see what was on the bite

My customers have reported good catches of reasonable sized bream around Jumpinpin this week, with the weather cooling down especially at night we will see the quality of fish get better as we head towards May. Some of the more productive spots are Tiger Mullet Channel, Mc Kenzies Channel, Whalleys Gutter, Crusoe Island, Short Island and Dux. Closer to town Wave Break Island, Lands End and the Gold Seaway are all fishing well for a feed. Best baits are Mullet Fillet, Prawns, (Fisho Chicken Gut), White Pilchards and Live Yabbies.

We have seen a few Tailor being caught around the Pin Bar entrance, Kalinga Bank, North Bedrooms, Crusoe Island, Gold Coast Seaway, Currigee Channel and Crab Island on the incoming tide, not big numbers yet and the size of fish are average around just legal 35cm to 38cm range. Just keep an eye out for bird life or surface action to locate the schools of fish. Try trolling hard body lures around 90 – 100mm sized like the Zerek Ripper Diver is a good way to cover territory and find fish.

With the cooler weather starting it’s a great time to look for a big Jew Fish, as the Mullet and Tailor schools move in so will the larger 15-25kg specimens. The Gold Coast Seaway and Jumpinpin Bar areas have been consistently producing nice fish right through the summer months, the quality of fish will just get better from now. Live baits like Mullet, Tailor, Herring and Pike are preferable, Fresh Mullet fillet is also an option, just remember to target the tide changes.

Reports of good catches of Crabs have been filtering in again this week, quality Mud Crabs and Sand Crabs have been caught. Tiger Mullet Channel, Whalleys Gutter, Jacobs Well, Cabbage Tree Point, Canaipa Passage, Never Fail Islands, Pimpama River, Brown Island and the Coomera River are worth a look.

At the time of writing my report it looks like the Westerly wind will stick around for the weekend. We will see a NW direction on Friday and then during Saturday & Sunday it will swing W/SW with plenty of Sunshine on the way.

If you have any great catches to report or fishing photos please email them to brett@coomerahouseboats.com.au
