Aussie bass reminder: closed season starts June 1

FISHERS are being reminded that Australian bass will be off-limits throughout Queensland tidal waters when the closed season starts on June 1 until August 31 2017.

Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol manager Ian Fricke said the closure was in place to protect Australian bass during their breeding cycle. “The annual closure period is vital to protecting this migratory species of fish during a vulnerable time when they head downstream to spawn in brackish waters each year,” he said. “The closed season allows stocks of Australian bass to replenish to ensure there are healthy and sustainable fish stocks for current and future generations of Queensland anglers.”

Mr Fricke said fishers can continue to target and keep Australian bass caught in non-tidal waters. “Size and possession limits still apply to Australian bass taken from these waterways. The minimum size is 30cm and the possession limit is two,” he said. “QBFP officers conduct regular patrols during closed seasons and those found doing the wrong thing are risking an on-the-spot fine of $487 and a maximum penalty of $121,900. Anglers will also require a Stocked Impoundment Permit to fish for Australian bass in Queensland’s 63 stocked dams and weirs.

“A SIP can be purchased online at www.daf.qld.gov.au, over the counter at Queensland and selected NSW Australia Post outlets, or by phoning 1300 575 359.” The closed season for Australian bass in Queensland tidal waters ends on September 1, 2017. If you suspect illegal fishing activity report it to the Fishwatch hotline on 1800 017 116.
