With the water in the Noosa River being the colour it is, fishing the run-in tide is a must. As the clean water from the ocean enters the river, baitfish start to become active and in turn brings all the other fish on the bite. The fresh has also pushed good numbers of bream down river and fired them up. Good catches of bream are coming from Gympie terrace, the Dog Beach, the Sandbags and the river mouth rocks. Best baits are any kind of oily flesh like mullet or bonito. Whiting are also being caught in good numbers at the very top of the tide and the start of the run out. Live worms, peeled prawn and Yabbies have been working very well, prawn coloured surface walkers like the Eco Gear PX 55 surface walkers are the perfect lures for whiting as they have great trailing assist hooks that pick up the whiting when they bite short.
There have been some nice flathead present around the lower parts of the river near the drops of the sand bars, the start of the outgoing tide seems to be the best bite. For the bait anglers; fresh mullet strips or whole pilchard baits fished on gang hooks has the best option, for the lure anglers Soft vibes including Fish Candy Curley tail, Madness Shiritin Vibes and Entice Assault vibes have all been good in the darker waters. The back of the sound has seen mangrove jack being caught on the run out tide. Live baits and fresh mullet strips being a real drawcard. Trevally and tailor have been worth targeting in Woods Bays on surface lures like Strada Viral, Bassday Sugapen and Storm Gomuko Pencil. Gladiator Prawns have also been working well with a good coating of pro cure scent. Quality mud crabs being potted throughout the lower reaches of the river. Weyba creek has also been a popular spot. Fresh mullet by far the best bait for the pots.
On the beaches; live worms, and pipis have been responsible for the capture of some quality bream, whiting and dart. The gutters along North Shore are really starting to look good after the recent swells and with the new moon we should also see the odd jew and large tailor prowling those same gutters. Plenty of flathead have also been taken with fish making their way out of the river in search of a feed. Small pilchard baits, mullet and bonito fillets have all been prime baits.
In the fresh water; bass have been holding hard against the timber and down deep, fishing blades and jigs has been the way to go, give the Evergreen Little Max blades, Ecogear ZX blades and smaller Maria Spin a try. For those casting around the timber try River2sea Chasebaits 4” and Zman 4” swimmerz rigged on Owner Flashy Swimmer hooks, these rigs are great as you can cast deep into the timber.
On the Offshore scene, larger boats stayed on the trailer for most of the week with the large swell and windy conditions, the weekend saw a bit of a reprieve and a few diehards headed to the closer reefs, Sunshine Reef was where we saw most of the activity with some nice snapper, sweetlip and tusk fish taken, fishing live baits got the best results. The Charters also were out and did the run up to The Hards, fishing in a 1.5m swell they managed some good fish including pearl perch snapper, gold band snapper, moses perch hussar, venus tusk fish, rosy job fish. Spanner crabs are also starting to come on, popular spots for spanner crab are the 35m mark north of the outer Gneerings, 40m line off Coolum and 30 to 40m mark inside North Reef off Noosa. The spanner crab legal size limit is 10cm where the shortest distance between the tip of the front spike at the front of the carapace to the mid rear edge of the carapace base. A bag limit maximum is set at 20 per person.
