Support your local seafood industry this Christmas

CHRISTMAS is around the corner and what better way to celebrate with your family than with local seafood from Aussie waters?

Assistant Minister for Agriculture and Water Resources Anne Ruston said having a good supply of fresh, local seafood depended on having healthy fisheries and a viable Commonwealth commercial fishing industry.

“Australians love their seafood,” Minister Ruston said. “The Australian Fisheries Management Authority works with industry to help ensure Commonwealth fisheries are sustainable and well-managed, and with decisions based on the best available science. The proof is in the pudding, with the latest Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resources Economics and Sciences ‘Fishery status reports 2017’ showing that for the fourth consecutive year, no stocks solely managed by the Commonwealth were subject to overfishing.

“To inspire your seafood cooking these holidays, AFMA has gone out to commercial, recreational and Indigenous fishers to ask them for their favourite seafood recipe. Over the next fortnight AFMA will be publishing these recipes, and today they’re kicking things off with spelt crusted deep water flathead fillets with wasabi mayonnaise. There are some delicious-looking recipes in store, so why not try something new with the help of the people who ensure you have fresh local seafood at your retailer each week.”

Some of the recipes include:

  • Scallops with sweet chilli sauce;
  • Southern bluefin tuna in a teriyaki marinade;
  • Pan-fried boarfish;
  • Mediterranean blue eye trevalla;
  • Flathead with lemon and moscato glaze; and
  • Crumbed squid.

The recipes are posted on the AFMA website afma.gov.au/seafood-christmas-2017 and on Facebook facebook.com/AustralianFisheriesManagementAuthority.

Commonwealth fisheries contribute $385 million to Australia’s economy annually.
