Offshore has been blowing hard all week with only a few charters managing to do short trips to North reef and Sunshine reef. The strong Northerly to South Easterly winds and New moon have meant it’s been very quiet. At North Reef the boys picked up snapper, pearl perch, estuary cod and a few unstoppable fish too. In closer Sunshine reef has been holding small snapper, sweetlip, pearlies, coral trout and smaller mixed cod species. There have been multiple sightings of birds working the bait schools but the pelagic’s are not hitting them, but with the hotter weather it is only a matter of time before they start to arrive. Be sure you have all your slugs and wire sorted before they arrive as reports of spotties and tuna are becoming more frequent from Fraser Island and Hervey Bay.
In the rivers we have seen a great run of bigger giant trevally. These fish have been smashing bigger Sugapen surface walkers in the 95mm size off the top during lower light times of the day. Be sure to have 10-12lb line and similar leader if you want a chance to get these bigger fish in. Surface fishing around Munna Bridge, Munna Point, Woods bay and the dog beach are the best spots.
For those anglers fishing bait and soft plastics then the trevally and flathead have been latching on and giving anglers a great battle on lighter gear. If running braid then you can still use 12lb or more leader as the water is still brown from the run off of fresh. Take a look at Squidgies prawn paddle tail plastics in the 80mm size with 1/4oz 2/0 jigheads. If using baits then fresh worms and mullet strips are working well when fished on running sinker rigs.
Freshwater has been fishing really well with saratoga and bass on the hit list for most anglers. With the warmer weather the water temps are starting to climb so break out your surface lures and be on the water for day break and last light. Borumba has stopped flowing over now which should make navigation easier while it is full. Once the sun is up try the new Rapala Jack deep jerkbait along the weed edges and twitch it downward toward the bass. Working the edges with spinner baits and lightly rigged soft plastics like Keitech Easy shiners on weedless hooks is also producing some cracking fish. If out in the open the Jackall TN60’s and soft vibes and hard metal vibes are working well on the schooled up fish.
