Snap it, share it and reel in some great prizes

FISHERS have the chance to win some great prizes simply by taking a selfie at southeast Queensland’s newest attractions.

Minister for Agricultural Industry Development and Fisheries Mark Furner said the 10 Fish Attracting Devices (FADs) have proved very popular since they were installed off the Gold and Sunshine Coasts last month.

“We’re already seeing photos on social media of people at these FADs from Double Island Point to the Gold Coast and it seems they’re popular with fish too, with schools of mahi mahi (dolphinfish) already swimming around these structures,” he said. “With Christmas just around the corner we’d love to see more people out there having a go at catching some of these sportfish species like cobia, mahi mahi and mackerel and to sweeten the deal, we’re launching a competition with some great prizes on offer.

“Over the next eight weeks, simply take a selfie at one of our FADs, post it on Fisheries Queensland’s Facebook page and you could win some fantastic donated prizes like a Garmin Echomap, two $500 vouchers from BCF, fishing rods and a stack of lures.”

Mr Furner said the structures were part of a $1 million program designed to boost the offshore fishing experience in southeast Queensland.

“There’s an added benefit of taking some of the pressure off snapper and pearl perch, which are currently overfished and stocks are very low,” he said. “We want to install more FADs based on feedback from the public and further details on the program will be released as it progresses over the next 6 months.”

GPS locations of the FADs are available on the Department’s website at www.fisheries.qld.gov.au and will be promoted through Fisheries Queensland social media.

FADs are for the benefit and enjoyment of all and we remind people not to moor on the FADs and to be courteous to other people fishing in the area.
