VMR Family Fishing Classic this weekend

The annual VMR Family Fishing Classic will be held over this weekend at the VMR base at Burnett Heads. This year there is over $50,000 in prizes including two boats to be won. By the number of entry forms we’ve received in store at Tackle World, it looks like there will be a record number of entries.

Once again this year, the south-easterlies are predicted to increase making offshore fishing uncomfortable over the competition. Keep safety in mind and check the local weather forecast for any changes as it gets closer to the weekend.

The Burnett river will be the place to be to catch one of the top 4 estuary species nominated for the VMR comp. Bream are all through the river at the moment and they are responding well to both soft plastics and baits such as mullet fillets, peeled prawns, white bait and fresh yabbies. Try anchoring next to one of the many rock walls with Kirbys and the North Wall being two hot spots lately.

Big whiting are becoming a little patchy but I’m sure that those who are targeting them should do well. Fresh yabbies will be the key to success when fixhed around the many sand bars in the Burnett.

Monster flathead and huge trumpeter have also been caught during the past week with Gulp soft plastics being very effective. Other species that you could expect to encounter in the Burnett this weekend are Tailor, Blue Salmon, Queenfish and Trevally.

I’ve got a feeling that there will be a lot of bent rods and big smiles, so come along and support our local VMR volunteers because they do a fantastic job for all of us.

Fish with confidence,
