What do eastern king prawns, snapper, and blue swimmer crabs have in common?
They are all part of our monitoring program for sustainable fisheries.
Over the next two months, our monitoring team will be at sea for their fishery-independent beam trawl survey targeting juvenile eastern king prawns, snapper and blue swimmer crabs.
The survey will cover areas from K’gari (Fraser Island) to the Gold Coast, including Moreton Bay.
Biological information, including size, sex and abundance, will be recorded and used with other sources of information to assess their stock status.

Profitable commercial and charter fisheries, enjoyable recreational fishing experiences and culturally important traditional fishing rely on our natural resources being used in a sustainable way – so we keep a close eye on fish stocks and the performance of management arrangements for each fishery.
Commercial and charter fishers operating in Queensland’s state-managed fisheries are required to complete daily logbooks – recording catch and where, when and how they fished. This information is available on the Qfish website (only data that represents five or more boats is available on QFish).
Fisheries Queensland uses this catch and effort data to manage the state’s fisheries in a sustainable way. By monitoring the information collected through the logbook program, we assess the condition of Queensland’s fisheries resources, develop fisheries management plans and determine the effectiveness of management measures already in place.
