Sunshine Coast – weekly fishing report

Fishing this week on the Sunshine Coast has been relatively quiet, with only a few notable catches reported. Unfortunately, the anticipated rainfall from last week was less than expected, so our river systems are still in need of a good flush. However, the upcoming weekend holds promise, with only a few showers, milder temperatures, and gentle breeze expected.

Saturday morning presents the best window for offshore fishing before the wind gains strength. Looking ahead to next week, although the rain may return, lighter wind could provide ample fishing opportunities for those willing to brave a bit of wet weather.

OFFSHORE

Conditions allowed for a few sneaky offshore trips this week, with tuskfish and cobia making an appearance on the Barwon Banks and the Hards. Mahi mahi are also showing up at the FADS. Sunshine Reef and North Reef have delivered some good catches of coral trout, pearl perch, snapper and sweetlip.

MAROOCHY RIVER

Maroochy River catches were similar to last week. Whiting continues to be reported in good numbers, with flathead and grunter thriving in the murky waters. Jacks have started to fire, with some good catches reported. There is an abundance of bait fish in the river, so it’s a great time to throw in the cast net for some livies. Some of the bigger mangrove jack catches reported have been caught on live bait.

Prawn and paddle tail soft plastics continue to be your best option for soft plastics. If you’re looking for something new, try the MMD Flatfish soft plastic lure, which is designed to imitate a juvenile flathead. They’ve just arrived in store and are proving to be very popular already.

FRESHWATER

Our freshwater dams are following the positive trends of the previous week. Warmer weather and increased river flow have led to more active fish, resulting in catches that include bass, mary river cod, sooty grunter, and the occasional saratoga.

NOOSA

Consistent with previous weeks, the Noosa River is offering a challenging yet rewarding fishing experience. Sand whiting at the mouth and Woods Bay continue to be a reliable catch, along with trevally, flathead, and bream around Tewantin.

CALOUNDRA

Caloundra area has been buzzing with activity over the past week, with some great catches reported. The Passage has been especially lively, with reports of mangrove jack, flathead, whiting, and the less commonly seen fringe-eye flathead. Local fisho Kosta made a notable catch off Kings Beach rocks, landing a spangled emperor on a rock crab.
