I RECENTLY went on a trip to Jumpinpin with plans of catching whiting.
Because I use artificial baits for most of my fishing nowadays, it was good to dust off the old Alvey reels and have a crack at the humble whiting.
Dad, my younger sister Lara and I left the ramp at 6.30am and headed out in search of some dinner. After threading on a Cribb Island worm I cast out into the typical roaring summer tide and set down my favourite whiting combo. Lara was doing the same thing when she hooked her first whiting for the day and I had an inquiry as well.
A double hook-up on 30cm-plus whiting wasn’t a bad way to start the morning.
Plenty of activity kept us busy for a few hours, with multiple fish of about 35cm taking a liking to our worms. I was happy with my catch of a 38cm whiting that was lucky enough to be released to fight another day.
It was a really enjoyable day out, and coming home with a good feed of whiting made it even better.
Our gear of choice consisted of Wilson Heritage rods, 6” Alvey reels, 6lb monofilament, 4lb fluorocarbon leader and Mustad Bloodworm size 4 hooks.
Smoking drags and sore arms.
