Bundaberg region has plenty to offer over Easter

I’m sure everyone is looking forward to having a few days off over Easter. Even though there might be a few showers and a little wind forecast for the Bundaberg area over the weekend, it won’t dampen the spirits of the locals who like to get out and wet a line and enjoy what the Bundy region has to offer.

BUNDABERG OFFSHORE AND INSHORE REEFS

Due to the forecast, the offshore fishing will be limited over the next few days. There is still plenty of school and Spanish mackerel on our close inshore reefs from Woodgate to Baffle Creek, but this weekend most of the action will be restricted back to the local rivers and impoundments.

BAFFLE CREEK AND THE KOLAN RIVER

Both of these locations have plenty to offer, and with a number of amazing camp sites along both systems, Easter never disappoints with good fishing, prawning and crabbing. The tenants at Miara Caravan Park on the Kolan have reported catching nice flathead and whiting around the sand bar at the mouth, and the odd mangrove jack and barramundi further upstream around Yandaran Creek and the train bridge near Booyan.

Some nice muddies have also been caught, so let’s hope this continues and everyone gets a good feed.

BURNETT RIVER

The Burnett has cleaned up nicely for Easter with the better water quality the fishing has been awesome. Good numbers of bream are hanging around most of the rock walls as well as some nice whiting and flathead further upstream around Splitters Creek. It’s well worth packing a few crab pots and taking a cast net this weekend on the Burnett as there has been good prawns and mud crabs caught his past week.

LAKE WURUMA AND LAKE CANIA

Both of these lakes will be popular over the Easter break. It is generally a fantastic time to camp at either location. Good numbers of big red claw continue to be caught at Wuruma with rockmelon and dog biscuits being two of the most popular baits. The Australian bass fishing on offer at Cania is as good as I can ever remember. Bass in the mid 40cms are being caught on heaps of different techniques from trolling to casting blades, soft plastics, tail spinners and poppers all working well on this terrific little impoundment.

LAKE GREGORY AND LAKE MONDURAN

We’re lucky to have Lake Gregory stocked with so many Australian bass and saratoga. Bass to 50cm have been common and willing to bite many different styles of lures with Bassman Spinnerbaits and Jackall Deracoups being the two standouts this week.

Easter is always a prime time to fish Lake Monduran. As the water temperature slowly starts to fall the barra start hunting the shallow points looking for warmer water which can make them easier to locate. Lures such as the Jackall Squirrel, Rapala Shadow Raps and Zerek Live Mullets have all been getting the job done on barra between 60cm and 80cm over the past week.
