I’m fishing for a whiting Christmas – choose local fish and seafood

WITH Christmas Day almost upon us, waves of Australians are beginning to stream into their local fish markets in search of delicious, nutritious and sustainable Australian seafood.

Minister for Agriculture, Bridget McKenzie, said Australian seafood comes from the safest and best managed fisheries in the world, and encouraged all Australians to choose local seafood this summer.

“Australians consume an average of 140 serves of seafood every year, and we sent $1.5 billion worth of seafood abroad in 2018–19,” Minister McKenzie said. “A trip to the local fish monger can provide the best ingredients for your favourite seafood dish. Whether it be crumbed Australian squid, pan-fried whiting or a delicious prawn salad, Australian seafood has something for everyone, and you’ll be supporting your local economy and sustainable fishing practices.

“Buying local seafood will also help support our regional communities, some of which are grappling with drought and fires. When Aussie families buy seafood sourced from Commonwealth-managed fisheries, they’re supporting best-practice fisheries management that keeps our oceans well stocked for future generations of seafood lovers. For the sixth year in a row, no fish stock solely managed by the Commonwealth has been subject to overfishing.

“This is an impressive result, and further evidence that our best practice fisheries management is both a remarkable success, and a shining international example. This Christmas I encourage everyone to support our seafood industry and enjoy some safe, clean, green, nutritious and delicious Aussie seafood.”
