Freedom Fishing & Coast Guard Sandy Straits Family Fishing Competition 2016

PLANNING for the 2016 Freedom Fishing Coast Guard Sandy Straits Family Fishing Competition is well and truly under way.

The annual event will be held during the September school holidays in the Boonooroo and Tuan catchment area, with fishing commencing at midnight on Friday, September 23 and last weigh-in at 2.30pm on Sunday, September 25.

Four categories of competition will suit all age groups and major prizes will be awarded for the best catch in each category.  Boonooroo Sandy Straits Bowls Club is the host venue for registration, ticket sales and weigh-ins as well as providing good food, drinks and entertainment on the Saturday evening.

Entry costs $20 for adults and $5 for children and tickets will be available from 6.30am on the Saturday and Sunday at the Tuan boat ramp. Tickets can also be bought in the weeks leading up to the competition from major sponsor Freedom Fishing Supplies at 95 Bazaar St, Maryborough and the coast guard base at 126 Eckert Rd, Boonooroo.

The competition is a major fundraiser for Coast Guard Sandy Straits, with all proceeds going towards covering operating costs, maintenance and repairs of primary rescue vessels and important rescue equipment.

Coast Guard Sandy Straits was formed in 1982 and is manned and operated by dedicated volunteers forming an integral part of the volunteer marine rescue network. The team provides emergency and other assistance to vessels in the Great Sandy Strait and Mary River waterways. The volunteer base also provides a 24/7 call-out service to vessels in distress and marine radio broadcasts seven days a week between 7am and 6pm, operating a listening watch and relaying weather, tide and boating safety information.
