We just can’t seem to escape the wind and rain here on the Gold Coast, this week has been dominated by the weather. At least we had a great weather window over the weekend that gave anglers a chance to get out and chase fish, crabs and prawns.
It’s was awesome to see a great weather forecast last weekend, and I managed to sneak out on Saturday morning for a look offshore. Due to weather and work it was my first look offshore for a few weeks and I was keen to see what was on the chew. The water quality was fantastic considering all the rain we’ve had. I was fishing with my mate Wayne, and we decided to check out the 18 fathom reefs and look for a feed of reef fish. We were blessed with light winds, small swell and not too much current. Float lining WA pilchards and large whole squid worked well producing a great mixed bag of Snapper, Pearl Perch, Moses and Tusk fish. Maori cod were thick but a bit on the small size. Using a good cube trail of burley seemed to work and keep the fish on the chew. If you’re keen to get offshore but don’t own a boat there are plenty of Fishing Charters available on the Gold Coast.
In the great weather, both Spotted and Spanish Mackerel made an appearance along certain areas on the 18 fathom reef east of the Seaway, Mermaid, Palm Beach and the Gravel Patch keeping local anglers happy. Some boats were anchored up fishing dead and live baits, some boats were trolling live bait, dead baits and hard body diving lures. Whilst at anchor working a metal slug is a great option to entice passing fish and also attract a school of fish into the strike zone of your bait.
The Prawns didn’t seem to mind the wind on Monday, making an appearance in good numbers up around Lamb Island. With no more great weather and the forecast for strong SE winds over the weekend it just depends on how keen you are to chase a feed of Prawns as most of the areas that produce will be open to the wind.
Customers have scored a few nice Mud Crabs thanks to the rain. Setting your pots in the river mouths and the edges of main channels when there is a lot of fresh water in the rivers is a good option to score a feed. Some of the better spots include the Mouth of the Coomera River, Pimpama River, Cobby Passage, Jacobs Well, Dux, Curtis Anchorage, Cabbage Tree Point, Mouth of the Logan River and the Never Fail Islands. Whole Mullet or fresh Fish frames should work, I do recommend to use a wire bait bag to stop small fish and eels picking at your bait.

At the time of writing my report the forecast the forecast looks like it’s stuck on repeat with the stronger South easterly winds sticking around Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Best option is to stick to sheltered rivers and estuary’s to find a spot out of the wind. Just make sure you have the most up to date weather forecast before heading out on the water.
