MSQ free boating safety checks this Easter

Maritime Safety Queensland (MSQ) and Coast Guard Rockhampton are hosting a free boat and safety gear check event at the Rockhampton Boat Ramp in the lead up to Easter.

This event will be held over two days, on Wednesday 16 April 2025 from 9am to 4pm and Thursday 17 April 2025 from 7am to 2pm.

This event will give boaters the opportunity to have a qualified MSQ officer provide a free check on their safety gear, licence, registration and vessel condition.

The inspections will have a focus on education, with MSQ staff discussing the common causes of boating safety incidents and what boaters can do to prevent or manage those incidents this Easter.

Boaters will also have an opportunity to watch demonstrations of how to use inflatable lifejackets and ask questions about new lifejacket laws which came into effect on 1 December 2024.

Also, the owners of all boats inspected will be entered into a draw to win an inflatable lifejacket.

This event supports boaters to follow these recommendations for safer boating:

  • Check that your boat is in good condition
  • Check that you have all the required safety equipment on board, that it is in date and in good condition
  • Check the weather before you go out. Have you got enough fuel?
  • Report your trip. Let someone know where you are going, how many people are on board and when you intend to return
  • Lifejackets — wear them! A lifejacket can only save you if you are wearing it, and it is a lot harder to put a lifejacket on in the water during an emergency.
