New lifejacket laws for Queesland boaties

MSQ is gearing up on explaining lifejackets laws at the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show

Visitors to the Sanctuary Cove Boat Show can get the good oil from Maritime Safety Queensland on the new lifejacket laws – what lifejackets they should have on board their vessels, and when they must wear them, before MSQ starts enforcing new lifejacket regulations from 1 July 2025.

The maritime regulator introduced new rules and lifejacket laws from 1 December 2024 mandating that lifejackets be worn in certain high-risk situations. Currently MSQ is rolling out education around the new rules to boaties before it moves to enforcement. MSQ will also require that all lifejackets comply with Australian Standard AS4758 from 1 September 2025.

The Sanctuary Cove Boat show is the largest of its type in the southern hemisphere and will run from Thursday 22 May to Sunday 25 May. With many boat show visitors likely to buy their first boat, or upgrade to newer models, MSQ expects many will want to gain a better understanding of lifejacket rules. MSQ’s presence at the show provides them with the perfect opportunity.

MSQ will operate from an eye-catching booth that is bound to be a hit with children as well as adults. Its staff will be ready to answer questions not only about lifejackets, but also on how to
avoid boating mishaps, and how to comply with ship-sourced pollution regulations and rules aboutlocal waterways.

MSQ General Manager Kell Dillon will be attending on Thursday 22 May and available upon request to speak to media on the topics of boating safety and lifejacket regulations.
