New owner, new energy at KB Marine

Boat lovers along Sydney’s northern beaches can expect even better service and support, with a new and passionate owner taking over at KB Marine, the well-known Mercury dealership in North Narrabeen.

Qualified marine engineer and former sailor Pami Kohli is now at the helm of KB Marine, having taken over from Ken Bullen who ran the business for more than 30 years. “For me, this is a challenge and a thrill but it also feels like I’ve come full circle,” he said. “When I was young I loved boats and I was always tinkering with engines. I was a serious sailor in Laser and Enterprise class boats and loved the competition and comradery. So, to be back among boats, boat lovers and enthusiasts is really fantastic.”

As a merchant marine officer, Pami sailed the world in ocean-going ships including gas tankers before coming ashore in Australia to take various roles with Shell and then Caltex, until last year when he decided he’d had enough of corporate life. “I thought a lot about what I wanted to do and what I enjoy and this ticks many boxes – it involves the water, the beach, engineering and maintenance, working with people, seeing people enjoy themselves. I believe the key to success is putting customers at the very centre of the business and making decisions based on understanding their needs. To that end it is imperative that there is absolute clarity and transparency on the scope of the work and the associated costs. Providing good service and value for money is fundamental to any customer and effective processes at the back end are essential to execute effectively.”

KB Marine has been a successful Mercury dealer for many years and Pami sees that relationship as the backbone of his business. “The business has a long history and a very good reputation and I’m determined to build on that,” Pami said. “I was very keen to continue as a Mercury Dealer given their range, reputation and brand recognition. Mercury engines are known and trusted around the world so it is a huge plus for the business.”

Selling engines, boats and trailers as well as offering full service and repair facilities, KB Marine is a one-stop shop for local boaties. “I’ve already had some positive feedback from customers and while there will be challenges ahead, I’m really excited.”
