Prime time to target Burnett River

BUNDABERG OFFSHORE

With a bit of luck, this weekend’s forecast isn’t looking too bad to get out and have a fish around the Bundaberg area.  The south-easterly winds are expected to exceed 15 knots which may present a small window for the bigger boats to explore the wider grounds.  Anglers who put in the effort last weekend were well rewarded with a quality mixed bag including red throat emperor, coral trout, red emperor and Spanish mackerel.

BUNDABERG INSHORE

By all reports there have been good numbers of mackerel, queenfish and mac tuna right along our coastline.  Trolling deep diving lures such as the Rapala X-Rap, or by casting metal spoons or blades like the Strada X-Blades have been working a treat.  With the first cool change of the year, the better quality snapper should not be too far away from coming in closer.  We will keep you informed over the coming weeks.

THE BURNETT RIVER

With the full moon next Sunday night, the bigger tides should fire up the Burnett.  This weekend will be a prime time to target Burnett River summer whiting with fresh yabbies and beach worms around the many sand bars in the Burnett.  Flathead inhabit similar areas and are always a welcome by-catch. Good numbers of bream and estuary cod have been holding close to the many rock walls.  Most of the better fish have been caught on the first hour of the run-in tide.

LAKE CANIA AND LAKE BOONDOOMA

Lake Cania is always magic at this time of the year.  With the cooler weather, the bass and yellowbelly tend to school up in the deeper margins of the dam.  They can be caught on many different techniques from trolling hard body lures to casting blades and soft plastics through the suspended schools.  The Lake Boondooma Open will be held this weekend, the 18th and 19th May.  This promises to be a great weekend for the whole family and I’m sure there will be plenty of nice bass and yellowbelly weighed in.

LAKE MONDURAN

Even though the days are getting cooler there are still plenty of barramundi up to 90cm playing the game at Lake Monduran.  Afternoon sessions have definitely been more productive.  Most of the barra caught lately on shallow diving hard body lures or soft plastic swim baits like the Zerek 5” Flat Shads.
