Sunshine Coast – weekly fishing report

Welcome to this week’s Sunshine Coast fishing report. We’ve finally enjoyed a run of good weather, with beautiful sunny days and minimal wind. The weather is looking pretty good for the coming weekend and into next week, so it’s an excellent time to wet a line! Dry conditions over the past week have given our estuaries a chance to clear, with clarity improving and good catches starting to come in. As always, make sure you check your local conditions before heading out.

Offshore

Excellent offshore conditions continued this week, with plenty of successful trips reported. Mackerel, mahi mahi, sweetlip and other reef species have been caught in close and at the Barwon Banks. The Barwon Banks have also seen catches of wahoo. The FAD’s continue to be the spot for mahi mahi. There’s been plenty of tuna busting up out the front, however they’ve been finicky recently and are proving hard to catch. We’ve also had many customers tell us that sharks continue to be a problem.

A big shoutout to Wes and his young fishing prodigy, Jasper, for sharing their incredible haul from Currimundi Reef. With a stunning 78cm coral trout tipping the scales at 5kg and a mix of beautiful reef fish – it’s clear these two had an unforgettable day out on the water! We hear Jasper’s dream is to catch a mackerel, and we have no doubt he’ll be ticking that off his list soon! We can’t wait to hear what you catch next!

Estuary

This week has seen our rivers start to fire again thanks to a break from the rain. Both the Noosa and Maroochy rivers have had a chance to clear and are fishing well. Some smaller creeks are still murky, but hopefully these will continue to clear with dry conditions predicted.

The Maroochy River has been a hive of activity, especially in the early morning with the incoming tide. Whiting and bream continue to be caught in good numbers from Cotton Tree through to Chambers Island, while some good-sized jewfish and trevally have been caught around the bridge pylons at the Cod Hole. Some huge giant herring have also been caught around the Cod Hole on 7g micro jigs. They are a fun fish to catch as they put up a fight and can be a challenge to land.

Trevally up to 40cm have been taking Holt Productions Swim Prawns, while flathead have shown a preference for 3.75″ Gobblers Lures Paddle Shads. Bull Sharks have been making a pest of themselves, so try and bring your catch in as swiftly as possible to avoid them. Special mention goes to Louise for her 70cm flathead, which she caught and released. For more info on how you can get involved in tagging, check out the Suntag website.

 

The Noosa River has also been firing, with plenty of bream, flathead and whiting reported.

Fishing around Caloundra continues to be good, with reports of some good-sized flathead in the passage, along with jewfish and some nice tailor. Mangrove jack continue to lurk in the canals and in the mid to upper reaches of local waterways.

Beach

Beach Fishos have been rewarded this week with some nice dart, whiting and the odd tailor reported. However, with winds expected to pick up over the next few days, it might be best to wait until next week when conditions improve.

Freshwater Fishing

The fast-moving waters in our freshwater creeks have bass on the move, favouring spots near weirs and run-offs. Spinnerbaits, Chatterbaits, and the MMD Bony Swim have been effective in enticing bass, while saratoga respond well to small to medium surface lures.

We’ve had deliveries of live beach worms and fresh mullet this morning, so make sure you call in and grab some of the freshest bait you’ll find on the coast.
