Coomera Houseboats customers getting into the jewfish

A good run of weather for all our Coomera Houseboats customers last weekend and early in the week was the perfect end to May.  The first day of winter kicked off with a cool south westerly on the Gold Coast.  Let’s have a look at what been biting this week.

Our Houseboat customers did well again this week getting amongst some quality Jew Fish.  Damon on board Sapphire Lady pictured in this week’s report was keen to land a nice Jew, well done mate it’s great to see you catch your target fish.  The drop in air temp this week means it is a great time to get rugged up and put in some late nights targeting Jew Fish throughout our winter months on the Gold Coast.  A few good spots to try are Wave Break Island, Gold Coast Seaway Walls and Pipeline, Paradise Point Bridges, Jumpinpin Bar, Five Ways Tiger Mullet Channel, Canaipa Passage and Marks Rocks in the Logan River.  Live baits like Mullet, Pike and Tailor are great.  Working big plastics and hard body lures will work well in different areas and conditions.

A few nice Tailor have been showing up around the Pin Bar entrance, Tiger Mullet Channel, Crusoe Island and also around the Seaway towards the top of the tide.  Keep an eye out for birds feeding on bait schools being attacked by the feeding Tailor.  Cast a range of different sized metal slugs, poppers and stick baits should result in great surface bite.  A good way to hunt fish if the surface is quiet is trolling hard body lures until you locate the school of Tailor.  If you prefer drifting baits whole WA pilchards rigged on 3 gang hooks is a favourite method.  Once the wind and swell drops fishing the beach gutters along from Surfers Paradise north to the pumping jetty should produce a mix of Tailor, Bream, Tarwine a Jew Fish during winter.

Our Houseboat customers all did very well catching some top quality Mud Crabs last weekend, even as the water temp drops it’s always worth setting the pots for a feed during June.  Sand Crabs should also still be around the main channels.

Local Bream anglers have been getting amongst some nice fish this week, I usually use a 6lb to 8lb fluro carbon leader depending on structure, 3 to 4 ball sinker and a size 4 Mustad bait holder hook. My favourite bait is Mullet fillet cut into strips, the skin makes the bait a bit tougher and can with stand the smaller picker fish until a bigger Bream comes along and nails the bait.  Other good baits are Mullet Gut, Prawns, Squid, White Pilchards WA pilchard cubes.  I do recommend to keep a burly trail going to get the fish fired up and feeding, it’s a fine line as you don’t want to give them too much just a taste to keep them around your boat.  I also recommend the Wilson burley pellets they work well.  Jumpinpin area, Logan River, Broadwater and Gold Coast Seaway are all fishing well at the moment.  For land based anglers rock walls, bridges and Jetty’s are all worth a go as the fish will be feeding around the structure.  Around the pin look for fallen trees, creek mouths and holes, some good structure can be found in Tiger Mullet Channel, Five Ways, Crusoe Island and Short Island to name a few.

Seabreeze is a great website to access a local forecast http://www.seabreeze.com.au/graphs/

At the time of writing my report the forecast is not looking the best for the weekend with stronger Southerly winds hanging around till early next week. We are luck on the Gold Coast you will always find a spot to hide out of the wind and have a fish. Conditions are looking ok to head offshore at this stage just  make sure you have the most up to date forecast before heading out on the water.

If you have any great catches to report or fishing photos please email them to brett@coomerahouseboats.com.au

Good luck with the Fishing.
