Cody Reid, above..."Hey guys. I was fishing the lower estuary on the last of the run-out tide on Saturday morning, throwing a small Sugapen surface lure. We found a patch of bait with tailor smashing them up so I cast my Sugapen into it, then a few taps of the rod and I was hooked up to this solid 60cm+ tailor. After six minutes of fighting the fish on 8lb line, I got him in the boat. Released him after taking a few photos. Photo: www.fishingnoosa.com.au

Noosa River anglers clean up on winter species

With a great couple of sunny days last weekend, families enjoyed all the Noosa River had to offer and we able to clean up on a variety of species. Flathead fishing has been outstanding in the Tewantin/Ski Run stretch of the river. The deeper channels around the river mouth have also produced good numbers. Fishing live baits like herring, mullet and prawns close to the bottom on the runout tide has been the best strategy.  For those that fish soft plastics Weyba creek and the lower end of the river has been more productive. Vanilla Ice and Apple Juice Chase baits in 2.5 and 3 inch are working well. Whiting have been caught in good numbers this week with some great catches reported. Weyba Creek and lake have fished well. The last of the run out seems to work best in these areas, down near the river mouth the deeper channels around the bottom of the tide has also seen some nice fish. Live worms, peeled prawns and squid tentacles have been the go to bait.

Bream have been the go to species this week with some really good fish being caught, the river mouth and the jetties along the river are all holding great numbers of fish. Heavy Cranka crabs in Sand Colour have once again smashed the bream this week with some outstanding fish being taken by these great little lures. The bait brigade has had some good catches. Mullet gut, white bait and pilchards have produced the goods.  GT’s have been caught in good numbers this week with poppers and surface walkers.

Queen fish and Tailor have also shown up in good numbers this week. The current line has produced tea leaf Trevally, big eye, G.T’s and Queenfish with the back of the sound also producing some great fish. Both Woods Bays has fished well this week with the surface action outstanding, try lures like Strada Virals, Nomad Madscads and Storm Chug Bugs.

Heading offshore; the snapper are really starting to make there presents felt with some quality fish boated this week.  Sunshine reef has fished well for Pearl perch right on dusk, there have also been good cobia, tusk fish, big sweetlip and squire. With the outstanding conditions we had last weekend those with larger craft fuelled up and did the miles with the Barwon Banks and the Hards with both fishing extremely well. The Banks produced Snapper, Cobia, tusk fish, Moses perch and Pearlies and The Hards fished well for Tusk fish, nannygai, pearl perch, Hussar, cobia and Mori cod. North Reef was also on the radar with Cobia, Pearl perch, Moses perch, snapper and tusk fish. The Charter operator did the big steam to Double Island Reefs and had monumental success with Snapper, Red emperor, tusk fish, pearl perch cod and a monster cobia.

On the beach; Teewah Beach has fished well this week there are some really nice gutters in close at the moment and they are holding Bream, flathead, whiting and plenty of tailor. Prawns, worms, pippis and pilchards are working well.   Metal slugs cast off the rocks around the headlands have had really good results with tailor responding well. The points have good concentrations of fish at the moment Bream, Tailor, ludrick and gar fish.  Try mullet, bonito, squid strips or whole pilchards. The eastern beaches have fished well for Whiting, Bream, flathead, tailor and some nice size mulloway. Big baits fished over the change in tide has nailed some great fish.

Borumba Dam has fished well this week with Bass, yellow belly and Saratoga caught. Red claw have also been caught in good numbers. This is unusual as they are pretty quiet at this time of year. The bays and upper reaches of the two main arms have also fished well with schools of fish holding in the shallower water.  Lake Macdonald has fished really well this week. A lot of Bass have been taken around the botanical gardens and in the North facing bays across from the dam wall. The upper reaches near the road bridges and in the skinny water have fished well for Bass and Saratoga. If you are going to fish these areas target the surface as it is more productive.
