Some perfect days over the last week have seen families enjoying all that the Noosa River has to offer, with the rain we had a couple of weeks ago the run off into the river made the water rather dark but as we move into the bigger tidal part of the month the river is fast clearing. Flathead are still in fantastic numbers with plenty of quality sized fish taken this week, they still tend to be in the lower sections of the river and have responded to a wide range of baits including prawn, pilchards, hardy heads and even yabbies. For the lure anglers there has been a wide range of lures that have got the job done. Soft vibes including Fish Candy Curly Vibe and the harder Entice Assault vibe have been really firing as the vibration they put out is picked up by the fish’s lateral line. Trevally including Golden, Big Eye and GT on the chew around Woods Bays and the back of the Noosa Sound, the incoming tide has been the time to target them.
Plastics that have been getting the job done have been Samaki Boom Shads, Zman Minnowz and the Keitech Easy Shiners, rigged on a 1/8 to 1/6 jig head depending on the depth and current. Gympie terrace has again been a hot spot for whiting and kids and parents have been having a ball catching these great table fish, a great tip for catching whiting is to use light lines and fine worm hooks. Mangrove jack are also feeding well with some nice catches coming from the structure that lines the river, fishing live bait has been the most productive so make sure your cast net, and live bait pump are up to scratch. Mud Crabs are on the move with all the fresh that is in the river. On the offshore seen, plenty of angler have made the best of the conditions and headed out wide, larger craft made their way to the Hards, Barwon Banks and the Reefs off Double Island with some outstanding results, quality snapper, pearl perch, tusk fish and even some yellow tail king fish were all boated. Live baits and big strip baits fished hard on the bottom has been the way to go with heavy leaders a must. Soft plastics have also been excellent and are great when there is a lot of smaller pickers as they tend to find the bigger fish, Snapper love those with 7” Jerk Shad style plastics with the Motor Oli, Coco Ice and Nuclear Chicken the most popular colours. Sunshine and Halls reefs are working well with Snapper, Sweetlip the main target, various Cod species and Tuna also getting caught on a range of baits and soft plastic lures. Having a good burley trail is all important when fishing the reefs, frozen blocks of Tuna oil mixed with burley pellets, sand and minced pilchards makes a great burley. If you can’t be bothered to make your own Davo’s has its own special recipe in the freezer ready to go.
In the Surf it is all about the clearer water so the incoming tide seems to be more productive, Bream, Flathead, Whiting and Dart are keeping beach anglers busy at Northern end of Sunshine, Fishing the gutters and casting to the edges of the rips with lighter gear is working well. For the rock hoppers, the headlands are starting to fire up with quality snapper and sweetlip taken on strip baits of fresh Mullet and salted bonito, pilchards fished on a paternoster rig have also been successful.
In the Freshwater the warmer waters has brought the bass to the surface and they have been feeding around the snags and weed that line the banks, surface frogs and surface lures like the Jackall Micro Pompadours, cicada and grasshopper presentations have also worked well.
