92 ghost crab pots pulled from Moreton Bay

ghost crab pots ghost crab pots moreton bayDURING October Queensland National Parks rangers joined forces with Fisheries Queensland (Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol) to tackle ghost crab pots in #MoretonBay Marine Park.

Abandoned ghost crab pots can entangle or trap a variety of marine wildlife and there is also a risk to birds and other animals that may enter the pots on a low tide and drown as the tide rises.

The crews worked around tidal restrictions to remove 92 pots from the waterway.

While numbers are unknown, it is estimated there are potentially thousands of abandoned pots in Moreton Bay Marine Park.

Remember that if you find an entangled or stranded marine animal, contact the Queensland Environment Department on 1300 130 372.

To help Fisheries Queensland locate and remove derelict crab pots, call Fishwatch on 1800 017 116 (toll free within Queensland).
