Big Tailor off the Beach!

Over a 5kg Tailor was taken near Marcus beach. The offshore seen over the past week has been nothing short of fantastic, longtail tuna schools have been present in Laguna Bay and hitting bait schools, throwing soft plastics like the Zman 5inch jerk shads let them sink for a minute and a fast retrieve is really a fun way to target these fish.

North Reef is still producing some nice snapper as well as teraglin jew and pearl perch.

Soft plastics like the Gulp Squid vicious from Berkley are perfect as a second bait on a two dropper rig and keeps you in the game if you lose your bait.

Heading up towards Double Island, the reefs up there have seen some cracker pearl perch, rosie job fish and some really nice red emperor. Chardon’s Reef is starting to fire up for billfish, trolling teasers with skip baits have been worked well.

In the river; whiting are still in outstanding numbers with pretty much all the lower reaches of the river producing fish, Weyba creek and Weyba lake have also been fishing well for whiting, worms yabbies and peeled prawns have been the favoured baits, a lot of angles are having success with soft plastics worm imitations, the Gulp sandworms come in a great range of colours and look fantastic on the hook.

There have been some nice big eye trevally in Woods Bay and around the Sound, they have been hunting up baitfish and hitting them on the surface first thing in the morning and late in the afternoon, it’s a great time to get your poppers and surface walkers out, there is a great range of poppers from Lucky Craft perfect for this job. As the sun gets a little higher in the sky it’s time to get the soft plastics out, the fish will tend to run a little deeper so soft plastics like the Squidgy Ifish range are perfect for tagging trevally, trevally really enjoy the odd prawn so the news Zerek Hot Legs live shrimp are an excellent choice, worked slowly across the bottom these will attract a quality fish.

Micro jigging is also another great way to attract quality fish the range of Blue Blue micro jigs in six and nine grams are perfect for the job. Further up the river the area outside the yacht club and up towards the Tewantin ski run has also fish well for nice flathead, fish over the 75 cm have been regularly taken and returned, nice table fish around the 50 cm mark are also plentiful with bait, soft plastics and hard bodied lures all doing the job.

On the beach but Tailor have started to make their migration south after spawning up at Fraser Island there have been some outstanding fish taken this week with a fish over 5 kg taken down towards Marcus beach, pilchards and mullet fillets have been excellent baits, in the gutters along the beach Whiting bream and dart have all been keeping anglers busy.
