Man convicted for abusing Fisheries Officer on social media

Last week, a Murwillumbah man was found guilty of two charges of abusing a Fisheries Officer after posting himself on social media using offensive and abusive language towards a NSW Fisheries Officer. He now has a conviction and must pay almost $4000 in fines and costs as a result of his behaviour.

Everyone is entitled to courtesy and respect while at work and Fisheries Officers are no exception. Fisheries Officers are on the frontline protecting our aquatic habitats and fisheries resources for current and future generations.

The conviction is the first time that an individual has been prosecuted for abusing a Fisheries Officer using social media.

This result sends a clear message: it is unacceptable to be abusive towards our Fisheries Officers whether it be face to face or in a public forum such as social media.

The maximum penalty a court may impose on a person abusing, threatening or assaulting a Fisheries Officer is $22,000 or imprisonment for 3 months (or both).
