Awesome fishing in rivers around Bundy

Firstly, I hope everyone has had a good break over the Christmas/New Year period, recharged your batteries and are looking forward to a bigger and better 2019, both on and off the water. Unfortunately the forecast for the Bundaberg area is looking pretty windy along the coast for the next few days, but as always, check the latest forecast before heading out. Fishing may be restricted to the local rivers and impoundments, but these can provide some awesome fishing.

THE BURNETT RIVER
The Burnett River is looking very healthy at the moment with heaps of small prawns and bait fish right throughout this system. Some cracking bream, flathead, grunter and mangrove jack have been keeping the kids entertained during the school holidays with some of the most productive areas being Fairymead Bend, Kirby’s Wall, the Town Reach and the sand bars up towards Splitter’s Creek.

BAFFLE CREEK
Once again, very similar to the Burnett with lots of small prawns and bait fish flicking around. The upper reaches of the Baffle are still producing some exceptional mangrove jack fishing, both with baits and soft plastics as well as hard bodies. Just take care as you venture further up this fantastic system due to the many submerged rock bars and snags. Down towards the mouth, anglers have been hooking into some excellent flathead and whiting with fresh yabbies working a treat.

KOLAN RIVER
The Kolan River has been fishing very well, with a few mangrove jacks being caught down in the lower reaches. Visitors who have been fishing this area while here on holidays have reported catching some cracker jacks, making their fishing trips very successful indeed.

LAKE CANIA
Last weekend I did a quick run over to Cania Dam for a fish and to check out this magic part of the world once again. After checking into the Big 4 Cania Holiday Park, we hit the water landing some nice Australian bass to 49cm and a couple of saratoga top 62cm. These were all caught on Bassman Spinnerbaits cast around the timber-lined bays about half-way up the dam. Next morning, we managed to land a few bass on surface lures, then a few more on Spinnerbaits once the day warmed up. This impoundment is currently sitting around 85% so there’s plenty of water for everyone to get out there and have a good time.

LAKE MONDURAN
Monduran is still my favourite location to fish for barramundi. My son and I fished Lake Monduran on Thursday last week. For the day we landed nine barra including an 82cm and a 77cm fish. The hot lures that worked for us were the Strada Tera 125, Storm Thunder Barra and Rapala X-Raps. It’s great to see that so many barra between 50cm and 85cm are being caught all over this impoundment. Let’s hope that before the 1st of February, someone catches the Bundaberg Toyota Golden Barra worth $15,000.

Fish with confidence,
Dale Smith
