Big bream and whiting biting on Gold Coast

We were lucky to have some great weather last weekend before the return of strong south easterly winds and rain on the Gold Coast making fishing conditions a bit average for midweek anglers.

I had a great day on the water last Sunday with my kids fishing in the Pirtek Fishing Challenge. Whiting was our target species for the Queensland division https://pirtekfishingchallenge.com.au/ it’s a great day on the water with all monies raised going to Prostate Cancer research.

The kids did well scoring a dozen beach worms on Saturday for me and a good mate of mine did the very hard yards in the mud as I had to work and was generous enough to make sure I had plenty of live bloodworms for bait. We ended up catching and releasing 30 Whiting with 8 fish over the 40cm mark. The results of the comp will be available on their website Saturday 24/3/18 fingers crossed we do ok, will let you know how we go next week. Good luck to all the other anglers that fished.

Customers have been catching a few small Hammer Head Sharks around the Jumpinpin area consistently for the past couple of weeks. Not big Sharks, but great fun on light gear. The small Sharks have been taking whole WA pilchards on gang hooks and a wire trace. The Bedrooms, Tiger Mullet Channel, Canaipa Passage and Tipplers Passage have seen a bit of action. Bull Sharks have also been pretty active throughout Gold Coast waterways, the Nerang River, Coomera River and Logan River are fishing well. Whole Large Mullet, Mullet Fillet, Stingray and Eel are all good bait. We have plenty of Circle Hooks, Wire Trace and Crimps in store if you’re keen to chase a toothy critter.

Customers have been landing some great feeds of quality Whiting throughout the Broadwater and Jumpinpin during the week. The Coomera River north and south arm, Pimpama River, Crab Island, Paradise Point, Green Bank, Gold Bank, Bedrooms, Jacobs Well and The Logan River are fishing well before the rain. Worms and Yabbies make great bait, I recommend using a size 6 bait holder hook, size 4 to 5 ball sinker and a long trace of 6lb fluorocarbon leader for best results.

For a feed of big Bream and Flathead, the Sandbanks and channels around Wavebreak island have been fishing well.  Also try Crab Island, Coomera River, The Never Fails, Curtis Anchorage, North Bedrooms, Tiger Mullet Channel, Jacobs Well around the shoals, Logan River and Canaipa Passage. Yabbies are a great all round bait, the kids will have fun pumping them. I’d also recommend Worms, Prawns, White Pilchards and Mullet Fillet to catch a feed.

Hope you all have a good weekend and get out for a fish, if you have any reports please let us know how you went.

At the time of writing my report the forecast looks like the SE winds and showers will ease on Friday.  Saturday will be moderate SE winds and cloudy then by Sunday the wind be light E/NE being the pick on the days to get out on the water.
