BUNDABERG OFFSHORE
How good was the weather forecast last weekend! It was fantastic to see all our local boat ramps choc-o-block with trailers. By all reports there was plenty of nice red emperor, coral trout, coronation trout, redthroat emperor, hussar and grass sweetlip that made their way into ice boxes last weekend. Plenty of cobia were also caught on the wrecks off Bundaberg. These fish are fantastic fun to catch and not too bad to eat as well. Let’s hope this weekend is as good as last weekend. Always check the latest weather report before heading out.
BUNDABERG INSHORE
All our local inshore reefs are fishing well. The key is to fish these areas early as the sun is coming up or late afternoon. This is when the better class of snapper, grass sweetlip, grunter and mackerel have been caught.
THE BURNETT RIVER
By this weekend the tides will be building towards the full moon (next Monday September 20). This weekend will be prime time to target big summer whiting around the many shallow sand bars around Bundy. Flathead have also been on the chew. Two great methods to catch a feed of flathead are using soft plastics and casting into the shallows or trolling hard-body lures like the new Pristine-Flat attacks. Mangrove jack are becoming a more common capture as the water temperature starts to rise, so make sure your gear is up to scratch because its looking like another cracker mangrove jack season.
LAKE MONDURAN
As I mentioned earlier, the full moon is next Monday night. I’m tipping there will be plenty of 1m barra caught at Lake Monduran this weekend. The water level is currently still at 37 percent and the water temperature is getting up around 24C in the afternoons. One of the hot techniques has been casting large soft plastics like the Molix 140 shad, Castaic 7” Jerky J Swim or Zerek 7” flat shads.
This year’s Tackle World Bundaberg Family Fishing Classic held at Lake Monduran will now be run online over a two-month period due to COVID-19 restrictions. Terms and conditions will be written up over the next week, so keep an eye out on the Monduran Anglers and Stocking Association Facebook page and on their website https://masa-fishstocking.org.au/ The amount of cash and prizes for the competition is outstanding and well worth getting onboard. Funds raised go towards stocking the lake with fingerlings and benefits the Lake Monduran barra fishing community.
