A JOINT funding agreement between the Department for Transport and Main roads and Redland City Council will see long-awaited dredging works undertaken at the William St boat ramp and adjacent Raby Bay channel.
The proposed works will deepen the entrance channel and dredge out the basin around the boat launching facilities at William St, Cleveland.
Member for Cleveland, keen boatie and fisher Mark Robinson welcomed the funding.
“The frustrations of local boaties launching and retrieving vessels from the boat ramp will soon be a thing of the past,” Dr Robinson said.
“I have worked hard to get better access for local boaties with the launching pontoons that are almost complete.
“With the announcement of dredging work imminent, the facilities will be first class when completed and will provide an enjoyable experience for users.”
The dredging work is scheduled for the financial year 2016-17. During the remainder of this year, the department will undertake works designs and obtain the necessary environmental approvals.
In the following financial year of 2017-18, work will also begin to extend the breakwater on the northern side of the pontoons.
“The added benefits of this breakwater will provide for some relief from waves whipped up by northerly wind,” Dr Robinson said.
“There is nothing worse than trying to launch or retrieve a boat in high winds.
“This is a clear win for local boaties.”
