Hi Everyone, hope you’ve all had a great week, it’s nice to see some lighter winds and plenty of sunshine on the Gold Coast after all the average weather the past couple of weeks. With nice conditions forecast it was great to see plenty of anglers out having fun fishing.
The Coomera River is still looking pretty dirty with lots of fresh water still flowing over the weir, the good news we have seen plenty of bait fish around the Gold Coast City Marina area with predators like Trevally and Mangrove Jack smashing into the Mullet, Herring and Gar Fish. The weekend will be the perfect time to head up the river in search of a Mangrove Jack, some good spots to look will be the Highway Bridge, Rail Way Bridge, Rock Bar on the corner near Salt Water Creek entrance, along The Boat Works, Riviera and Gold Coast City Marina pontoons.
Also try working your way out of the river and down the South Arm along the Sanctuary Cove Rock Walls down towards Paradise Point. Popular methods for chasing Jacks are casting and retrieving Zman Diezel Minnowz 4’ or 3’ Minnows rigged on TT Head LockZ HD jig heads in 1/4 or 3/8. Trolling hard body lures to cover ground is another productive method, live bait is still very popular and a great way to score a bite. Common bycatch when chasing Mangrove Jack will be Trevally and Cod.
Flathead fishing has been exceptional this week, mate Brett Doolan headed up to Jumpinpin early in the week and caught and released some cracking sized crocs in both deep and shallow water on lures. The extra fresh water runoff has been great spreading the bait out and getting the fish into feeding mode. Some good spots to try will be the Pin Bar Entrance, Bedrooms, Kalinga Bank, Crusoe Island, Perrys Hole, Canaipa Passage and Tiger Mullet Channel. Down South try Currigee, The Gold Coast Seaway Rock Walls, Wave Break Island and the Nerang River for some quality Flathead.
With the full moon this week chasing feed of Whiting will be worth a go, fishing from late afternoon in the evening will be the best time to chase a nice feed. The Nerang River, Paradise Point, Coomera River, Pimpama River, Logan River, Jacobs Well and Cabbage Tree Point should fish well. Worms and Yabbies are the best bait.
Offshore fishing will be on the cards with a smaller swell forecast for the weekend giving anglers a nice weather window to chase a feed. After the big swell the past couple of weeks the close reefs will be worth a go. Snapper should be around in numbers along with Moses, Tusk, Trag Jew, Cobia and Jew Fish. As the water warms up we should start to see Spotted, School and Spanish Mackerel making an appearance on the Gold Coast. If you’re fishing at anchor just remember to keep a burley tail going to increase your chances of catching a feed.
Clint from Brad Smith Fishing Charters will be looking for where the clean and dirty water meet and be working these areas the lower Broadwater and Nerang River looking for predators chasing bait on the dirty water edges. Jewfish, Trevally, Bream and Flathead should be on the chew.
Hope you all have a good weekend and get out for a fish, if you have any great catches or photos you would like to share, please email us and let us know how you went.
