Rain good for Gold Coast systems

We have definitely had more than our fair share of rain and wind on the Gold Coast lately. It’s good for the system and fishing in the long run but hard for finding a window to go fishing unless you’re keen to brave the conditions. We’ve had a few boats anchored in Tiger Mullet this week out of the wind, at least on a Houseboat you have good shelter to go fishing. Rain good for Gold Coast systems

Rain, rain and wind go away, we’ve had enough on the Gold Coast this week! The rain is a must have for the system but we seem to get either a feast or famine in South East Queensland. We have a heap of fresh water flowing form our local catchments into the Nerang, Coomera, Pimpama and Logan River which will affect the water quality for a while until the fresh and sediment settles. It will give the rivers a good flush out and in turn get the bait on the move, it’s just a matter of targeting certain species and areas if you’re keen to go fishing.

Bream love the rain and a fresh water flush. They have been on the chew in the Coomera River fishing around the local jetty’s, bridges, rock walls and snags. I took my kids for a quick fish on Sunday National Gone Fishing Day, pouring rain but we ended up with a few good Bream. They are a great option for kids to chase land based, other good spots to try are Hope Island, Paradise Point, Runaway Bay foreshore and canal mouths, Biggera Waters, Labrador, The Gold Coast Seaway Walls, Marine Stadium and Jacobs Well. Best bait is Prawns, Squid, White Pilchards, Mullet Fillet, Mullet Gut, Worms and Yabbies.

It will be worth targeting a Jewfish around the bar entrances, they will be schooling up hitting all the bait schools washed out by the fresh water flush. The Pin Bar and Southport Seaway has been fishing well the past few weeks for Jew and given the conditions they will be worth targeting if you’re keen. Try working large Zman Plastics, Zerek Fish Traps, Storm Soft Vibes or live baits like Pike, Mullet and Herring. Some big Flathead are still hanging around and will also hit you while you’re fishing for Jewfish.

Keep an eye out for current lines where the fresh meets the salt water and work the edges. Bait and predators will be active in this area throughout both the Pin and Broadwater. You may be lucky enough to snag a Jewfish, Trevally, Tailor or even a Tarpon – you just never know what may be lurking.

Customers have been scoring a feed of Mud Crabs and even Sand Crabs after the fresh flush. Work your pots and move them around until you find the crabs as they may be on the move from the feeder creeks.

Hope you all have a good weekend and get out for a fish, if you have any reports please let us know how you went.
