HI Everyone, hope you’ve all had a great week and enjoyed some time fishing on the Tweed and Gold Coast over the Queen’s birthday long weekend. The weather has been a bit up and down this week with stronger winds, day time temps hot and cool with the odd storm forecast.  Let’s have a look at some option for the weekend.

Congratulation to all the teams and anglers that competed in this year’s Gold Coast Sports Fish Club 2019 Flathead Classic. Weather conditions were good compared with past years and the fishing was exceptional as well with plenty of lucky teams and anglers catching and releasing lots of quality Gold Coast flathead.

Congratulation to team Wilson, Scott Flemming, Robert Payne and Kord Lucas for taking out first place in this year’s comp. Scott is our local tackle rep from Wilson Fishing, he and his crew are very experienced and that paid off this year, catching and releasing some fantastic flathead using Zerek Flat Shads, Tango Shads and Fish Trap Vibes around the Jumpinpin area.

Jumpinpin has been fishing quite well this week producing some quality catches. Drifting the Bar entrance with live baits like herring, pike, winter whiting or mullet has worked well on large flathead, jew fish, tailor and trevally. If you can’t catch live bait then WA pilchards, large whole squid or mullet fillet will work.

The Gold Coast Seaway has also been producing some good catches of jew fish off the pipe line. Large plastics and Zerek fish trap soft vibes have been accounting for some top quality fish as well.

Our houseboat customers caught some good sized whiting and bream off the sandbanks east of Cobby Passage this week, also the Logan River, Western end of Tiger Mullet Channel, Green Bank, Gold Bank,  Jacobs Well, Bedrooms, Coomera River North and South Arms, Pimpama River and Crab Island are worth a look.  Yabbies and worms are great bait.

Smithy from Brad Smith Fishing Charters reports on that Tweed It’s that time of the year now, the water temperature is starting to rise and the giant trevally are taking full advantage of it. Trevallies follow the channels along the full length of the Tweed moving well upstream on the run in tides and then make their way back with the run out tides.

We have caught trevally on every trip this week and although they have only been small we have lost two big models with one straightening the hooks and the other pulling the lure out during the fight. Trolling a combination of deep and shallow running lures has been the way to go but I have two spare rods rigged with MMD Splash Prawns ready to cast at them if they bust up on the surface.

Clint from the Gold Coast reports some good fish came aboard my charters this week before being photographed and released. We got onto mangrove jacks and giant trevally four days in a row, which was nail-biting fun for my guests. One of the highlights of the week was eight year old Luke catching his first mangrove jack on an afternoon charter with his family.

In the Broadwater, flathead have made a welcome return all coming on Ecogear ZX40 blades coated in Sax Scent and soft vibes. They have been scattered everywhere from Runaway Bay to Southport in depths ranging from three to eight metres. Keep moving to get the number when the tide is running. We have also caught winter whiting, flounder, squid, queenfish, tarwhine and squire. The Nerang River has been slow for flathead with just the odd one around, there has been some big bream and some nice GT’s.

Hope you all have a good weekend and get out for a fish, if you have any great catches or photos you would like to share, please email us and let us know how you went.
