Fisher Fined for Undersized Snapper Catch

A RECREATIONAL fisher has been ordered to pay $2000 by the Pine Rivers Magistrates Court for being in possession of quantities of undersized fish. Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol field officer Imraan Esat said the fisher was apprehended at Dohles Rocks boat ramp on the Pine River.

“QBFP officers approached the vessel with the intention of conducting a routine inspection,” Mr Esat said. “While on the boat, our officers found the fisher in possession of 23 undersized snapper and two undersized grass emperor. “Snapper have a minimum size requirement of 35cm and a possession limit of four. “All snapper caught were under 30cm. “The minimum legal size for grass emperor is 30cm. “The fish seized were 21cm and 27cm in length.”

Mr Esat said the fisher had only recently acquired the boat and was not aware of Queensland’s fishing regulations. “Recreational fishers should be aware of the restrictions surrounding the taking of regulated fish,” he said. “I hope this penalty will serve as a future deterrent. “Rules are in place to protect and conserve fish stocks. “By following the rules these valuable fisheries resources will be around for current and future generations of Queenslanders. “If anyone suspects illegal fishing, please report it to the Fishwatch hotline on 1800 017 116 so the matter can be investigated.”
